Bikeability cycle training

Bikeability is 'cycling proficiency' for the 21st century, designed to give the next generation the skills and confidence to ride their bikes on today's roads.

There are three Bikeability levels. A child will typically start Bikeability Level 1 (bike handing skills) once they have learnt to ride a bike, with 9-14 year olds progressing through to Level 2 (basic road skills), and then Level 3 tackles more advanced road skills. Certificates and badges are awarded upon successfully completion of each course and pupils are encouraged and inspired to achieve all three levels.

We would like every child in North Tyneside to be given the opportunity to participate in this FREE course that gives pupils the skills to stay safe, and healthy! All North Tyneside schools are offered the course.

Bike recycling schemes

Key Enterprises

Key Enterprises are a charity providing support training and development opportunities for people with mental health problems. One side of their many activities is recycling unclaimed stolen bikes donated from the Police to pass on to community groups and individuals in the borough. Prices start from just £15. Stock is often plentiful but varies from day to day, so a visit is always recommended.

Northumbria Youth Action (NYA)

Northumbria Youth Action (NYA) delivers training programmes to young people from the age of 14 upwards. It sets out to develop the attitudes, skills and capabilities they will need to continue into further education, training or working life. NYA offers a course in restoring old bicycles making them fit for the street. In the process of doing this, students learn a great deal about how they work and how they can be maintained and repaired. The bikes they produce are available to the public at great prices.

GoSmarter in North Tyneside

GoSmarter in North Tyneside aims to encourage more sustainable travel to and from schools.
That means leaving the car at home and, instead, cycling, walking, scooting or using public transport.
As well as aiming to change pupil, parent and staff behaviour, the initiative involves physical changes to streets near schools.
Pupils can get involved in designing local cycling and walking improvements, which are then introduced soon afterwards.
Activities and events led by the GoSmarter team also include Car Free Days, street audits and school assemblies.
