Scheme overview
North Tyneside Council secured funding from the government’s Transforming Cities Fund to upgrade 11 signalised crossing points across the borough.
Using the latest intelligent transport system technology, some of the major bus routes in the borough were upgraded. The new technology prioritises buses and helps improve bus reliability and journey times.
As part of the works, the signals were also upgraded to LED signals. This improves the safety of the signals as they run off a reduced voltage and increase their reliability as the LED lifespan is much greater than the previous bulbs. The LED signals also reduce the energy usage and carbon footprint.
The new signals support North Tyneside towards becoming a cleaner, greener borough as part of plans to work towards being carbon net zero by 2030.
