Overview
The A188 Benton Lane corridor is part of a key link between Northumberland, Newcastle and North Tyneside and includes the Four Lane Ends Metro and bus interchange.
North Tyneside Council applied for and won £2.2million from the Department for Transport to carry out major improvement works on the route.
It involved:
- replacing the roundabouts with traffic signals at the Four Lane Ends, Goathland Avenue/West Farm Avenue junctions
- signalising the Quorum-Balliol Business Park roundabout
- providing off-road pedestrian and cycle link from Goathland Avenue
The aims of the project were to improve the flow of traffic and public transport movements, supporting future job creation and local economic growth, enhance road safety and provide better pedestrian and cycle facilities.
Construction was managed for the council by its partners Capita and completed in 2015. The scheme is being monitored and improvements continue to be made to the traffic signals to ensure traffic flows as best as possible.
