Celebrating popular scheme's Diamond Jubilee

Elected Mayor Norma Redfearn with the residents who took part in the event

To celebrate the Diamond Jubilee of the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award scheme, North Tyneside Council arranged a special event to honour everyone who has taken part.

The council’s Participation and Advocacy team invited anyone who had completed the award to send in their stories and photographs of their experiences within the scheme.

The 10 participants and their guests were welcomed by North Tyneside’s Elected Mayor, Norma Redfearn, before everyone was invited to share their stories with the rest of the group.

From expeditions out of the borough to presentations from royalty, the group covered all bases and had a great time sharing their varying experiences.

Norma Redfearn said: “I thoroughly enjoyed the event and it’s been great to hear all the stories from these wonderful people.

“The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award scheme is already very popular in our borough and I look forward to seeing the success continue as it grows even further.”

Adam Warkman, who achieved his gold award in the early 1990s, added: “I really enjoyed taking part in the scheme; the variety you get is great.

“I would definitely recommend it to young people growing up now – I think it’s a fantastic way to meet new people and get a fantastic sense of achievement, which can benefit you in a future career.”

North Tyneside Council is also looking for residents to volunteer within the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award. If you are interested in being a part of the scheme, please contact participation@northtyneside.gov.uk.
