North Tyneside Council and Age UK North Tyneside are inviting nominations for their annual ‘Age Takes Centre Stage’ awards, which celebrate the contribution of older people to the community.

The awards are part of the borough’s Age Takes Centre Stage Festival, which returns in October for its 21st year with a month-long programme of events and activities exclusively for residents aged 50 and over.

Nominations for the awards can be made up until the closing date of 5 September and are invited in three categories:

Individual Award – for an older person aged 50 or over who has given a lot to the community in North Tyneside as a volunteer

Group Award – celebrating the achievements of groups based in North Tyneside and in which at least half the members are aged 50 or over that give older people more opportunities to enjoy life and contribute to the community

Chairman of the Council’s Newcomer Award – an individual or group as above, whose contribution began between November 2015 and August 2016.

Chairman of the Council, Cllr Dave McGarr, said: “Older people are vital to our borough and it’s important that we celebrate the dedication and commitment of volunteers through these awards.  My Newcomer Award is an addition for 2016 which reflects the fact that new groups and volunteers are getting involved in their communities; and I’m looking forward to seeing all the nominations.”

Alma Caldwell, Chief Executive at Age UK North Tyneside, said: “Nominating a group or individual for an Age Takes Centre Stage Award is a great way to give older people the recognition they deserve for the many ways that they help to make our communities better places to live.  The awards ceremony in October is always an uplifting morning and everyone who is nominated is invited and congratulated for what they do.”

Age Takes Centre Stage is a joint project between North Tyneside Council and Age UK North Tyneside, supported by DFDS Seaways, who will host the awards ceremony for a specially invited audience on board the cruise ship MS King Seaways while docked at Royal Quays.

Nomination forms are available at the bottom of the page or by calling (0191) 280 8484, picking up from any North Tyneside library, or from Age UK North Tyneside on Bradbury Street, North Shields.

The popular month-long festival runs throughout October with a varied programme of events and activities aimed at encouraging older people to try something new, develop a new hobby and meet new people.  Further details on the programme will be released shortly.
