Seaside clean-up squads have been formed to keep North Tyneside’s award-winning coastline spick and span.
North Tyneside Council has introduced three Coastal Environmental Maintenance teams to carry out improvements along the various promenade areas, footpaths and bank sides.
The new taskforce will operate from The Haven at Tynemouth to St Mary’s Lighthouse at Whitley Bay until the end of October 2016.
Their work will complement the council’s existing Local Environmental Services teams and will focus on:
- Litter picking
- Strimming around fence lines and street furniture
- Grass maintenance
- Removing weeds
Cllr John Stirling, cabinet member for Environment, said: “I’m absolutely delighted to see the launch of our new Coastal Environmental Maintenance teams.
“They will help keep the areas around our coastline, which has recently been awarded a number of prestigious Blue Flags for its extremely high standards, clean and tidy and somewhere people can remain proud of.
“Their role will really add to and enhance the great work already carried out by our Local Environmental Services teams. North Tyneside is a great place to live, work and visit and this excellent new initiative will help keep it that way.
“We would still always encourage members of the public to do their bit too by making sure they throw their litter away properly and report any issues, such as untidy streets and overflowing bins, to us. We also run a number of clean-up campaigns which people can join in to help tidy their local area.”
Throughout August the teams will be in the following areas: Knotts Flats, Collingwood Monument, Browns Bay, Empress Gardens, Duchess Dene, water pump station to St Mary’s Island, Priors Haven, Cliffords Fort, Brewers Bank and Tyne View.
In September they will be in the following areas: Norma Crescent, the Grand Hotel, King Edwards Bay, Sharpness Point, Fish Quay and Yeoman Street.
