Prioritising mental health in young people

A group committed to improving the health and wellbeing of North Tyneside’s young people has launched a new scheme.

To celebrate World Mental Health Day, which takes place today, North Tyneside Council’s libraries service will be teaming up with the Young Person’s Health and Wellbeing Board to launch the ‘Reading Well for Young People’ campaign.

Reading Well for Young People is a scheme set up by young people aimed at 13 to 18 year olds to help them understand and manage to their wellbeing and emotional resilience.

It has a recommended reading list of 35 books, selected by mental health experts and young people who have had experience of mental health issues.

Books in the collection offer information and advice for young people on a range of common conditions such as anxiety, depression and eating disorders, as well as how to deal with difficult life experiences like school and exam pressure.

Special collections of the books are available at Wallsend, Whitley Bay, North Shields and Killingworth Customer First Centres and 16 of the titles are available as e-books by logging in at https://northtyneside.overdrive.com

For more information on the Young Person’s Health and Wellbeing Board, you can contact the Participation and Advocacy team on (0191) 643 8217.

The full reading list and information on the books can be found by contacting any North Tyneside library.
