Summit special: Everest conqueror Matt Dickinson to give talk at library

Mountaineer Matt Dickinson will give a talk at Whitley Bay Library

Everest climber Matt Dickinson is coming to Whitley Bay Library to talk about his death-defying experiences.

The fearless documentary maker and author is the only British filmmaker to have scaled the world’s highest summit and made it back alive.

He will share some of his most thrilling exploits at the library, in the Whitley Bay Customer Service Centre, on York Road, on Tuesday 7 March, from 6.30pm.

Matt’s action-packed career as an award-winning director and cameraman for National Geographic TV and the Discovery Channel, has included assignments in Antarctica, Greenland, Alaska and on top of the highest live volcano in the world.

Along the way, he has worked with a host of famous and fearless adventurers and TV personalities, including Bear Grylls, Judy Leden and Brian Blessed, with whom he climbed Everest in 1996, surviving an avalanche and a killer storm in the ‘death zone’; more than 26,000ft above sea level, where the air is too thin to sustain human life.

Councillor Eddie Darke, Cabinet Member for Leisure, Culture, and Tourism, said: “I am delighted to welcome Matt to Whitley Bay Library next month. He has some extraordinary tales to tell and I’m sure that our visitors will enjoy finding out more about him and his adventures on Mount Everest. It’s not too late to buy a ticket.”

Tickets are £5. Book a place by calling Whitley Bay Library on 0191 643 5390.
