'Get up and go' for an apprenticeship

There are opportunities aplenty in North Tyneside as the borough celebrates the 10th anniversary of the annual National Apprenticeship Week.

Taking place from March 6 – March 10, the council has organised a programme of events around North Tyneside, working with schools and local businesses, to raise the profile of apprenticeships.

In the past 3 years, North Tyneside Council have taken on 89 apprentices, including Tom Watson and Jack Shipley, who took up their roles in the environment team in September 2015 and have now earned permanent positions within the council.

Delighted with their success, North Tyneside’s Elected Mayor Norma Redfearn said: “It’s fantastic to see young people like Jack and Tom get rewarded for all their hard work.

“We’ve made a big point of supporting apprenticeships at the council and in North Tyneside as a whole, so it’s great to see that more and more opportunities for young people are becoming available.

“Apprentices bring such enthusiasm into a workplace and with the right support; they can be very valuable assets to any business or organisation.”

Throughout the week, there will also be a number of events for local businesses to learn more about apprenticeships, including the annual ShowBiz event on March 8.

ShowBiz is an information and networking event inviting local businesses to share their knowledge and learn more about the business world.

This year, it will follow the theme of ‘Skills and Business Growth’, offering support and advice on apprenticeships, skills and training.

The week will culminate in North Tyneside with the annual Get Up and Go event on Saturday 11 March.

‘Get Up and Go’ aims to raise awareness and understanding of apprenticeships amongst young people aged 15-19 and their families. It has proved to be a popular event, with over 600 people attending in 2016.

The session will run from 10.30am to 1.30pm at the council’s HQ on Cobalt Business Park. Young people can drop in at any point for any length of time during the session.

The event will feature over 40 employers and providers who are actively seeking to employ and support apprentices within their business. These will include opportunities within businesses such as Accenture, Capita, Owen Pugh, Northumbria Healthcare and North Tyneside Council. There will also be organisations offering various volunteering opportunities.

Advisers from the Connexions service will be at the event to offer any advice or information, if necessary.
