Swimmers are invited to take the plunge for charity at one of North Tyneside’s most popular leisure centres.
Hadrian Leisure Centre will once again host the ‘one mile swimming challenge’ for individuals and teams of swimmers over the age of 10, with the aim of raising funds for the Alzheimer’s Society.
Participants are asked to raise as much money for the charity as they can before the day of the challenge, when they will aim to complete one mile in the pool, which is the equivalent of 64 lengths.
In its first year, 48 swimmers helped to raise thousands of pounds for ‘Learning Disability North East’ by collectively swimming almost 2,500 lengths, or 39 miles.
This year’s event takes place from 3pm-6pm, on Saturday 20 May, at the leisure centre on St Peter’s Road, Wallsend, and is organised by North Tyneside Council.
Brandy Riches, Assistant Manager of Hadrian Leisure Centre, said: “This is a fun and challenging event which people can choose to tackle as an individual or as part of a team.
“Anybody over the age of 10 is welcome to join in, and I am confident that we can at least match or do even better than last year’s event when everybody put in a great effort and helped to raise thousands of pounds for a local charity.
“It should be a fun and exhilarating afternoon.”
Every swimmer receives a free tee-shirt and there will be awards on the day for achievements including as the fastest mile, most lengths in an hour and the fastest mile as a team.
