North Tyneside launches 2017 canvass of electors

Press release: An abstract view of the Council crest

North Tyneside Council is canvassing thousands of households to ensure the accuracy of the electoral register.

Each year, the council conducts a canvass of electors to produce a list of names and addresses of those eligible to vote in local and Parliamentary elections.

An accurate register is critical to the democratic process and every household in North Tyneside should receive a Household Enquiry Form (HEF), along with instructions for how to respond.

Households are required by law to confirm or update the details for their home. They can do this via an Interactive Voter Registration (IVR) service, which allows a response via a dedicated website, by text message or over the phone.

Paper forms can also be returned but households are encouraged to use the IVR service, which helps the local authority gather the information more quickly and efficiently, whlie also saving considerable time and resources.

Jan Peirs, Electoral Services Team Leader, at North Tyneside Council, said: “This is a vitally important piece of work which we carry out each year to ensure that North Tyneside residents do not miss the opportunity to vote in future elections.

“Being registered to vote not only allows you to have a say in the local area and to vote in Parliamentary elections and national referenda, but it can also help to improve your credit rating because the register is often used by credit reference agencies to update their records. Even if you have no intention of voting, we still need you to be registered.

“We would ask residents to be as helpful as possible by returning the forms promptly and without the need for further action.”
