Thousands take part in Easter weekend run

More than 2,000 people took part in one of the country’s most scenic races today (April 1).

The 14th annual North Tyneside 10k Road Race was won by Ross Floyd, of Morpeth Harriers, in a time of 33 minutes and 12 seconds.

And the first female runner over the line was Charlotte Penfold, of North Shields Poly, in a time of 37 minutes and 06 seconds.

Organised by North Tyneside Council, it was an Easter Sunday sell-out, with 2,200 fun runners and competitive athletes alike, keen to tackle what is one of the most scenic yet challenging road races in the UK.

Hundreds turned out to watch and support the competitors in the picturesque race.

It started at The Parks Sports Centre, North Shields, before taking in the Fish Quay, Tynemouth Priory and a stretch of coastline. It also passed the travelling Spanish City Funfair on the Links, there for its annual visit, before finishing at St. Mary’s Lighthouse in Whitley Bay.

Phil Scott, Head of Environment, Housing and Leisure said: “With such a beautiful route, it’s no wonder the race is so popular and people travel from all over the UK to take part.

“I’d like to congratulate all the runners who took part in the event – especially Ross and Charlotte – and thank those who came along to cheer them on. The atmosphere was brilliant.”

The 6.2 mile run was organised by North Tyneside Council and supported by Start Fitness and Northumbria Spring, who supplied the drinking water along the route.

All competitors received a race t-shirt and their finish time by text message.
