Taking steps towards better health

North Tyneside Council’s Health Walk programme is going from strength to strength, with a new route added in time for the spring-summer season.

Northumberland Park in North Shields will host the new Health Walk, every Sunday starting on 6 May.  Walkers of all ages are invited to meet at 10.15am at the park’s Glass House Tea Room, for a one-hour route taking in the stunning scenery of the park.

Fourteen walks take place each week across the borough, with routes varying from coastline to inland and others taking in sites of historical interest and the borough’s heritage. They take place on all days of the week – with weekend walks setting off from St Mary’s Lighthouse causeway car park on Saturdays at 11am; and a family walk on Sundays at 10.30am from Hadrian Leisure Centre in Wallsend – with walkers on that route receiving a free swim voucher to use at the centre’s pool.

All walks are free and led by qualified walk leaders. All fitness levels are catered for and walk leaders adapt the route to suit the needs of the group on the day, so no one is left behind.

The social element of walking as part of a group is important too and all routes end with the opportunity to stay for a drink and a chat afterwards.
