Skilled professionals sought for council contracts

Local sub-contractors and suppliers are being invited to a special event being held by North Tyneside Council later this month.

From 1 April 2019, construction, housing repairs and maintenance services – currently delivered by Kier North Tyneside – will return to the direct management of the council.

And the local authority will soon be opening the process to appoint a variety of sub-contractors and suppliers to join its books and have access to regular work.

It’s looking for a range of skilled professionals – including plumbers, joiners, electricians, plasterers, painters, roofers and more – or businesses providing such services. As well as those who can supply electrical, plumbing and building materials.

They will work alongside almost 400 staff who are being transferred from Kier North Tyneside to the council.

And for those who are interested, the council is holding a special event on July 24 and July 25.

Speaking about the event, Cllr Steve Cox, cabinet member for Housing said: “The council is committed to ensuring that whenever we subcontract work, local tradespeople and businesses have the opportunity to bid for it – and on longer term arrangements – giving them the chance to grow and thrive.

“This is an important event so I’d encourage people to come along and find out more.”

Contracts will range in value so there will be sessions aimed at those who are self-employed, sole traders and local businesses, as well as other sessions for larger, national businesses.

Many of the contracts will be available from April 2019, when the council’s contract with Kier North Tyneside comes to an end.

Speakers will include representatives from the North East Purchasing Organisation (NEPO) and North Tyneside Council.

The sessions will all be held at The Parks Sports Centre, North Shields, on the following dates:

For sub-contractors:

  • Tuesday 24 July (aimed at smaller, local businesses), 8am-9am or 5.30pm-6.30pm
  • Wednesday 25 July (aimed at larger, national businesses), 8am-9am or 5.30pm-6.30pm

For suppliers:
