MP unveils affordable homes on former Dudley & Weetslade Social Club site

MP Mary Glindon has unveiled a new £2.4m development of affordable homes in North Tyneside.

Kier North Tyneside recently completed work to redevelop the former Dudley & Weetslade Social Club site, on Clayton Close, with 20 high quality family homes and apartments.

The scheme is a further boost to North Tyneside Council’s affordable housing programme, which has seen more than 1,130 affordable homes built across the borough in the last five years.

The programme was launched in October 2013 to provide more affordable homes for people who could not afford to rent or buy on the open market and is on course to deliver 3,000 new homes by 2024.

Mary Glindon MP joined ward councillors and Kier’s regional director, Mike Furze, to unveil a plaque and celebrate the opening of the new homes.

She said: “It’s fantastic to be here today to see this development open and be a part of it. It’s been a great partnership with local people, Kier, and the council.

“The flats and houses have been built to such a high standard and are what the people of North Tyneside deserve. I’m sure the people who come to live here will love their new homes. Whether you’re an individual, a small family, or a large family they have been designed to meet your needs.”

North Tyneside’s Elected Mayor, Norma Redfearn CBE, said: “I would like to thank Mary and everyone involved in supporting this new development. The new properties are fantastic and I wish the new tenants many years of happiness in their new homes.”

Kier North Tyneside has also started work on a further 22 affordable homes on the former Bonchester Court and Beadnell Court sites in Battle Hill, Wallsend.

The homes are being developed at a cost of £2.3m and are due for completion in March 2019.

Mike Furze, regional director at Kier, said: “The delivery of more affordable houses marks an important milestone for North Tyneside. Working together with the council and our supply chain we are providing vital new houses that are high quality and people are proud to call home."
