Work begins to improve Churchill Street

Work starts soon to improve the longest road in North Tyneside Council’s current resurfacing programme.

Around £3million is being invested in the borough’s highways network – more than 70 streets are benefitting, including Churchill Street in Howdon.

Stretching 900m, it’s the largest area to feature in the 2018/19 road resurfacing programme, which is managed for the local authority by its partner Capita and delivered by appointed contractors.

Churchill Street will be resurfaced from the junction with the A193 Tynemouth Road to number 242.

Subject to weather and other resurfacing progressing as planned, work will take place from Tuesday, August 21 to Friday, September 7, from 6.30pm to 11pm (excluding the Bank Holiday weekend).

The road will be down to one lane in the area of work and temporary traffic lights will be in operation.

Cllr Carl Johnson, cabinet member responsible for Environment and Transport, said: “The condition of roads and pavements is important to residents and a priority for the Mayor and Cabinet.

“I’m pleased that good progress is being made to deliver this year’s road resurfacing and maintenance programme.

“And I know that users of Churchill Street will welcome the fact it is to benefit from a much-needed new road surface.”

Road resurfacing is carried out when the road surface or its underlying layers have deteriorated to the point that they need to be replaced. The damaged layers are removed and new material is laid.

It is scheduled that over the first four days (Tuesday, August 21 to Friday, August 24) the existing carriageway surface of Churchill Street will be removed, known as planing.

The team will start at the northern end of Churchill Street, heading south towards the A193 Tynemouth Road. The new road surface will be applied from Tuesday, August 28 to Friday, September 7.

Bus services will still run on Churchill Street, however if a bus stop is within the works area it will be temporarily relocated to a point outside the area.

Notes to editors:

The Churchill Street/A193 Tynemouth Road junction will be resurfaced and enhanced later this year as part of the £4.7million North Bank of Tyne Improvement Scheme.

The future junction works will include dedicated right turn lane from the A193 Tynemouth Road westbound into Churchill Street, which will particularly reduce queues in the peak afternoon period. To accommodate this, the A193 eastbound will be reduced to one lane and the eastern side of the Churchill Street junction will be widened.
