Honouring the best of North Tyneside businesses

The best of North Tyneside’s businesses have been celebrated at the 21st North Tyneside Business Awards. 

The annual awards, which are organised by the North Tyneside Business Forum, celebrate the huge contribution that businesses make to the local economy and how they make North Tyneside a great place to live, work and visit. 

The ceremony was held at the Spanish City on Thursday night (15 November) and was attended by members of the business community. It was hosted by comedian Jason Cook with after dinner entertainment in the style of funfair stalls.  

North Tyneside’s Elected Mayor, Norma Redfearn CBE, said: “Congratulations to all of the winners and finalists who have been recognised here tonight.

“It is fantastic to see so many businesses celebrating their hard work and success; the work they do is absolutely vital to North Tyneside’s economy and I’m delighted that we can honour them in this way.”

This year there were five sector categories with the winner of each category being automatically entered into the prestigious ‘Business of the Year’ award. 

The winners of each category were:

  • New Business – Bright and Beautiful North Tyneside
  • Retail and Service Provider  – Heliguy
  • Leisure and Tourism – Riley’s Fish Shack
  • Manufacturing and Construction – Barrier Ex Ltd  
  • Digital and Innovation – Monitor Coatings

There was also the Heart of the Community Award which was nominated and voted for by the public to recognise businesses which show that it is not just the cash flow of a business that counts; it is making a positive difference to the borough. The vote closed at 7pm on Thursday and the deciding votes were made by the guests which attended the ceremony. The winner of the Heart of the Community Award was Carney Consultancy Ltd.

The “North Tyneside Business of the Year” award for 2018 went to Monitor Coatings.

Monitor Coatings is a technology leader for surface engineering in extreme environments and was one of the first UK companies to receive the an international Aerospace accreditation. They are currently developing and applying an innovate coating for the Royal Navy’s HMS Queen Elizabeth and Prince of Wales carrier decks.

Rebecca Allcock, Managing Director of Monitor Coatings said: “We’re absolutely delighted to be named North Tyneside Business of the Year. Monitor Coatings actively recruit from the local area where home time served ship building skills exist. This award will reinforce and promote the talent and drive behind out business.”   

David W Bavaird, Chair of the North Tyneside Business Forum, said: “I’d like to say huge congratulations to Monitor Coatings on winning the award. They were chosen for a number of reasons including being proud of their history and leading on innovation, making the best use of new technology and local skills. The company show a real commitment that makes North Tyneside such a special place to do business.”

For the fifth year, the Special Contribution Award was presented; this was awarded to the business which has made the biggest impact on the local community and economy of North Tyneside. This year the award was presented to a business which fully supports the use of the borough’s supply chain despite their parent company being on the other side of the world, in China. The award for 2018 went to SMD.
