Free parking provides Christmas cheer for shoppers
More free parking is being made available to Christmas shoppers in North Tyneside during the festive period.
All on-street car parking will be free at weekends during December in North Shields, Wallsend and Whitley Bay town centres as well as Front Street, Tynemouth.
It’s in addition to the hundreds of free spaces already available in some North Tyneside Council-managed town centre car parks and Priors Haven car park, Tynemouth.
The initiative aims to support local traders and North Tyneside’s economy by encouraging people to visit the borough’s town centres and busy village centre for their Christmas shopping.
The parking service is delivered on behalf of the council by its partner Capita.
North Tyneside Elected Mayor Norma Redfearn CBE said: “We know that the run-up to Christmas is a really important period for local businesses.
“That’s one of the reasons we help ensure the borough is a really vibrant place to enjoy through initiatives such as our Winter Festival and Christmas lights displays.
“Providing more free parking provides another reason for people to support local businesses and do their Christmas shopping in North Tyneside.”
On-street parking is already free on Sundays in the borough’s town centres. During December, this will be extended to Saturdays in town centres and to Saturdays and Sundays in Front Street, Tynemouth. Ticket machines will be temporarily shut down in the following locations:
