New council service is benefiting local businesses

Just over three months since the launch of a new council service and it’s already having a positive impact on local businesses.

Earlier this year [April 1, 2019], the construction, housing repairs and maintenance service returned to the direct management of North Tyneside Council.

Last year, in preparation for its return, the local authority held a series of information events for suppliers and sub-contractors interested in joining its supply chain and having access to regular work.  Hundreds attended the sessions including plumbers, joiners, cleaners, electricians, plasterers, painters, roofers and more – and businesses providing such services. As well as those who supply electrical, plumbing and building materials.

Now over three months into the new service and the newly procured supply chain includes a wide range of borough-based suppliers and subcontractors, meaning more local businesses and tradespeople can now benefit from this new council service.

Cllr Steve Cox, North Tyneside Council’s Cabinet Member for Housing, said: "It's really important that as a council we invest in our local communities and use the many great local businesses and tradespeople we have in the borough as much as we can.

“The council is committed to making sure that whenever we subcontract work, local businesses have an opportunity to bid for it.  In taking this approach we ensure they are given a chance to grow and thrive.”

One local business part of the new supply chain and benefiting is Wallsend based commercial and domestic cleaning contractor City Clean (Northern) Ltd, who provide cleaning services in empty council homes at the completion of repair works prior to them being re-let.

Ross Graham, Director of City Clean (Northern) Ltd explains: “We have been a family owned business based in Wallsend since 1977, so as a local business it’s great to know that North Tyneside Council values and recognises the benefits of using local suppliers.

“Our home is North Tyneside so getting the opportunity to become a regular and valued supplier to the council’s new service and build a long-term relationship is an important part of our ongoing operations.”
