Work to improve cycleways and footpaths in East Howdon is underway.
Existing paths on the A187 Tyne View Terrace will be widened and new sections of footpaths and cycleways will be created.
Drainage will also be improved between the Tyne Pedestrian and Cycle Tunnel and Northumberland Dock Road.
It comes after North Tyneside Council secured £427,000 from the Department for Transport Transforming Cities Fund.
The fund aims to improve productivity and spread prosperity through investment in public and sustainable transport.
Cllr Carl Johnson, cabinet member for Environment and Transport, said: “As well as improving walking and cycling links to the Pedestrian Tunnel, these improvements will also make a valuable contribution to our Transport Strategy, which aims to reduce congestion and improve journey times across the borough.
“It also complements our recently-completed work in the North Bank of the Tyne area, which was aimed at removing key transport barriers, enabling industry to invest in available land along the River Tyne.”
The work, which will be delivered by the council’s construction partner Capita, is expected to take about 13 weeks to complete, weather permitting.
With most of these improvements being done off the highway, traffic disruption will be kept to a minimum, with off-peak (9.30am-3.30pm) lane closures in place when needed, controlled by two-way temporary traffic signals.
Pedestrians and cyclists will be accommodated throughout, with the programme designed to preserve access at all times.
