Top-class results for North Tyneside's young people

Young people across North Tyneside are preparing for the next stage of their lives after collecting their exam results this morning.

As GCSE students across the country collect their results, North Tyneside’s young people will have particular reason to celebrate as they revel in their successes.

Overall, North Tyneside’s schools managed to maintain their positive performance from last year, with the local authority achieving an attainment 8 score of 45.6, sitting above the latest national average.

Congratulating the young people, Elected Mayor Norma Redfearn CBE said: “We have some incredibly talented young people in North Tyneside, and they have done us proud once again with a fantastic set of GCSE results.

“With many of our young people earning some excellent results, I am sure that they will go on to do amazing things in the future, whether that is through further education or apprenticeship or other job opportunities.

“From the head teachers and their staff, to the students and their parents or carers, everyone involved deserves a great deal of credit and thanks.”

Cllr Peter Earley, cabinet member for Children, Young People and Learning, said: “These results are yet another achievement for young people in North Tyneside to be proud of.

“Last week, we celebrated our best ever A-Level results, and with over 90 per cent of our schools rated as ‘good’ or ‘outstanding’ by Ofsted, there aren’t many better places than North Tyneside for a young person’s education.

“I would like to say a huge congratulations to everyone getting their results back today. They can be immensely proud of the work that went into these results and can now look forward to the next stage of their lives.”

And following their record-breaking A-level results last week, Burnside College are celebrating their best ever GCSE results.

The school has achieved its highest ever attainment 8 score at 44.9, which is above the national average for all schools. There are many success stories across all subjects, with students achieving a record number of grade 9 qualifications.

Daniel Jamieson, Headteacher at the school, said: “We’re proud to celebrate our fantastic English results with 78% achieving grade 4 pass or above and 59% achieved the government’s strong pass of grade 5 or above, both figures are well above national averages.

“In maths the hard work of new curriculum leaders has already been rewarded with significant improvements at all grades and results approaching national averages. We’re also delighted to see one of our students recognised by the exam board for having the best exam score in the country for business studies.

“We look forward to continued success with our young people, at GCSE and at sixth form, in the new year.”

At John Spence Community High School, there was a number of impressive success stories, as the school saw an attainment 8 score of 42.9, putting them above the national average.

A number of students achieved outstanding sets of grades 7-9, with some pupils overcoming numerous obstacles to achieve the results they needed to pursue their interests in post-16 education or training.

Headteacher Jonathan Heath said: “There have been some great results for our students this year, which is a reflection of their hard work and commitment in the run up to and during the exam season.

“The staff at John Spence work exceptionally hard to support the students and it is pleasing for all to see improvements in our results. We are proud of the broad and balanced curriculum we offer and there were significant successes in subjects ranging from Design Technology to History. These successes were matched by the improvement seen in the percentage of students passing both Maths and English at Grades 4 and 5, whilst performance in Science remains very strong in comparison to other schools.

“Overall, our 2019 results represent an improvement as part of our ongoing drive to raise standards and this is reflected in the fact that 12 subjects saw an increase in attainment levels compared to last year, which is particularly pleasing within the context of the new and more challenging GCSE curriculum.”

Students at Churchill Community College were up bright and early to collect their results and were greeted in exotic fashion as teachers hosted a Hawaiian Beach Party-themed collection day.

David Baldwin, Executive headteacher at Churchill Community College, said: “We are so pleased with the work that students have done to secure their grades. They have been well supported by staff and parents.

“We are especially pleased to report that our broad and balanced curriculum means students have taken and achieved exceptionally good results in the foundation subjects of Design Technology, Health and Social Care, Photography, PE, Art and Music.

“In addition, it is fantastic to note that achievement in Computer Studies is also excellent indicating that our students are achieving the skills they need to succeed in the digital economy.”
