Mobile library coming to Tynemouth's Front Street

From Monday 2 March, North Tyneside Council’s mobile library will be next to the Clock Tower on Tynemouth's Front Street and will be open on Mondays and Fridays from 9.30am-12.30pm and 1.30pm-3.45pm (excluding Bank Holidays).

It will ensure continued access to library services in a convenient location for residents, in addition to the nearby libraries at Cullercoats, North Shields, and Whitley Bay.

Tynemouth Library is set to close its doors on Saturday 29 February so that exploratory work can be carried out ahead of a planned transformation.

The council’s Cabinet will consider the plans at its meeting in May as part of the Ambition for North Tyneside programme, which sets out how the council will regenerate all parts of the borough and make it fit for the future.

If plans are approved, the building would be completely rebuilt as a modern hub for the community that could accommodate library and financial services under one roof.

The council will continue to operate the library and will partner with Newcastle Building Society to secure the creation of a community branch inside.

The new library would also have a Changing Places toilet to meet the needs of people with learning or physical disabilities.

High-quality private apartments could also be created above.

Other libraries nearby include Cullercoats Library at 16 St George’s Road, NE30 3LA;  North Shields Library at Northumberland Square, NE30 1QU; and Whitley Bay Library, which can be found on York Road, NE26 1AB
