More car parks are to close in North Tyneside as the council moves to reinforce the rules around staying at home to help limit the spread of the coronavirus.
Following the closure of car parks along the seafront, the council has now announced a total of 22 closures to discourage people from making non-essential trips out of the house or exercising in a place that isn’t close to home.
Wendy Burke, Director of Public Health at North Tyneside Council, said: “Closing our car parks is the only responsible thing to do at a time when we are telling people to stay at home, protect the NHS, save lives.
“To help get that message across, we are closing more car parks across the borough. This will help to reinforce the rules around social distancing and get the point across that people should ‘stay local’ and not travel unnecessarily for exercise.
“People are allowed to exercise once a day, either on their own, or with the people they share a home with. These measures are in everyone’s best interests and will ultimately help to save lives.”
