Saturday 11 July 2020 marks the 25th anniversary of the start of the genocide in Srebrenica, Bosnia.
Led by Ratko Mladić, with the backdrop of war, Bosnian Serb troops and paramilitaries descended on the town and in the following days around 8,000 Muslim men and boys over 12 years old were murdered. This was the largest act of mass murder in Europe since World War Two.
The atrocities that took place in Srebrenica 25 years ago have been recognised as a genocide by the international courts. Acknowledgement and remembrance are crucial in fostering good relations within society by bringing together those with different beliefs and backgrounds in a single act of remembrance
North Tyneside Council will not tolerate discrimination, harassment and victimisation on any grounds, we are committed to standing up against all forms of hatred and prejudice that targets groups based on their religion, ethnicity, gender, sexuality or any type of difference.
The theme for 2020 is “Every Action Matters”, which encourages everyone to think about their own behaviour and choices, however insignificant they may seem, to emphasise that positive or negative, we all have an impact on others and the world around us.
Now more than ever it is important for us to come together as people in the UK, no matter what our background, to celebrate diversity and to stand together in solidarity against hatred and discrimination.
