North Tyneside Council is to upgrade key commuter route.
Improvements will be made to the mini roundabout on the Coach Lane/B1318 junction in Wideopen.
The junction will be replaced with traffic signals and the road will be widened before and after the junction to create an additional lane southbound.
This will help cope with increased traffic from new housing developments within Newcastle City Council’s boundary and improve the junction’s operational performance.
Delivered by North Tyneside Council’s strategic partner Capita and due for completion in December 2020, this developer-funded scheme complements previous junction improvements along the A1056 Sandy Lane.
Cllr Carl Johnson, cabinet member for Transport, said: “We’re committed as a council to providing safe and accessible transport infrastructure.
“As well as helping with increased traffic from new housing developments, these improvements will strengthen a key link between North Tyneside, Northumberland and the city of Newcastle.”
During the works, the construction team will do all it can to work in a considerate manner, this includes limiting the closure of footpaths and restricting the use of traffic signals to off-peak hours (9.30am-3.30pm).
Ahead of the main site works getting under way, the construction team will set up a site compound on “Old Sandy Lane”.
