North Tyneside Council is flying its flags at half-mast and lighting up a landmark in memory of national hero Captain Sir Thomas Moore.
St Mary’s Lighthouse, Whitley Bay, will be turned blue from tonight until Sunday (3 to 7 February) in honour of the war veteran and national treasure.
The 100-year-old sadly passed away on Tuesday (February 2) after battling pneumonia and recently testing positive for coronavirus.
Sir Tom raised more than £32 million for the NHS by walking 100 laps of his garden before his milestone birthday – initially setting out to raise £1,000 – and was then knighted by the Queen in July.
North Tyneside Elected Mayor, Norma Redfearn CBE said: “Captain Sir Thomas Moore was a beacon of light and hope during such a difficult time for the whole country.
“He captured the nation’s hearts with his incredible and inspirational fundraising – he was a true hero and the very best of us.
“His lifetime of service to our country – including his courageous efforts during the Second World War – will never be forgotten.
“We share our deepest condolences and sympathies with his family and loved ones.”
