North Tyneside Council is set to upgrade 10 signalised crossing points across the borough.
The work will be delivered by the council’s strategic partner, Capita, and follows a successful bid to the government’s Transforming Cities Fund.
Work is due to begin on Monday September 5 and be complete by Autumn 2022, and is part of our overall work to reduce journey times.
The locations and duration of work is listed below. Please note that dates are subject to change due to factors such as the weather and preceding works progressing as planned:
- A188 Benton Lane near the former St Peter and St Paul’s Catholic Church, Longbenton; Monday September 5 for around six days
- A193 High Street East, near the junction with Ash Grove, Wallsend; Monday September 5 for around one day
- A193 High Street East near the junction with Border Road, Wallsend; Monday September 5 for around six days
- A193 High Street West, near the junction with Atkinson Street, Wallsend; Tuesday September 6 for around seven days
- A188 Benton Lane near Newcastle Dog and Cat Shelter, Longbenton; Friday September 9 for around four days
- B1505 Great Lime Road, near the junction with Georgian Court, West Moor; Tuesday September 13 for around 15 days

- A193 High Street East near the junction with Northumberland Street, Wallsend; Tuesday October 4 for around five days
- Park Road – A193 High Street East junction, Wallsend; date TBC for around 25 days
- A186 Station Road – A193 High Street West/East junction, Wallsend; date TBC for around 35 days.
When work is underway, temporary push button crossing points will be installed nearby for pedestrians and minor footpath diversions may also be in place.
In addition, work at the A188 Benton Lane in September will require temporary traffic signals and lane restrictions during off-peak hours only (9.30am-3.30pm). Road users should allow extra time for their journey as there may be delays.
When work begins on the Park Road – A193 High Street East junction and A186 Station Road – A193 High Street West/East junction in Wallsend, temporary four-way traffic signals will be in place for the duration of the works. To minimise disruption, work will be carried out during off peak hours only (9.30am-3.30pm). Once again road users should allow extra time for their journey as there may be delays.
