Improvement work set to begin at Killingworth Library

Refurbishment work is set to take place at Killingworth Library at the White Swan Centre in October.

As part of the council’s commitment to invest in libraries and enhance the customer experience, work will be taking place to install new flooring and shelving units with the aim of making the library more modern, vibrant, and welcoming.

This means that the library will close at 1pm on Saturday 1 October and re-open at 9am on Monday 24 October. The White Swan Centre will remain open throughout as will the library foyer, where customers will be able to choose from a limited selection of new and popular fiction books and access a people’s network computer (book in advance by calling 0191 643 2040). Staff will be on hand for returns and any other queries.

The customer service self-service payment kiosk, which is in the library space, will be unavailable during this time. Other customer services facilities will remain open.

Cllr Sandra Graham, portfolio holder for Sports, Leisure and Libraries, said: “This investment will transform the library into a more modern and welcoming place for the community to enjoy for years to come. I would like to thank all our customers for their patience during this short closure and I think everyone who uses the library will be delighted with the results.”

While the library is closed, customers may choose to access other libraries and Customer First Centres nearby.
