Success as school leaver destination figures for North Tyneside's young people hits almost 100%

97.9% of young people leaving school last year went into either higher and further education, employment, or training according to data collected by North Tyneside Councils Connexions service.

The data, collated annually, highlights that almost all school leavers in 2022 have continued to progress in education, employment, and training at rates higher than the national average.

The pupils who’re likely to be aged between 16 and 17 years have moved onto apprenticeships, Sixth Form, Further Education Colleges, employment with training and voluntary activities since leaving school in July 2022.

The council is celebrating as the number of young people taking up a training programme has increased too. There’s a wide range of training on offer in North Tyneside with young people joining training programmes with local providers, such as Northumbria Youth Action (NYA), Barnardo's Employment Training and Skills North (ETSN) and North Tyneside Adult Learning Service.

North Tyneside’s 16- to 18-year-olds are beating national figures too with 92.8% of year 12 and 13 pupils continuing in education, employment, or training.

Cllr Steven Phillips, Cabinet Member for Children, Young People and Learning at North Tyneside Council, said: “North Tyneside’s progression data is absolutely fantastic, particularly given the challenges these young people have had during their education including the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic.

“It’s a credit to the post 16 offer that we have in our borough that so many young people can access the provision they want whether that’s moving into an Apprenticeship or continuing their learning and development through education and training.

“Our teams work hard to ensure every young person has the opportunity to continue to grow and develop when they leave secondary school, and we have dedicated advisers who continue to work with and engage young people who are not in education, employment, or training.”

The data is collected by the Connexions service, part of North Tyneside Council’s Employment and Skills Service, from schools, colleges, training providers and direct contact with young people and their parents and carers.
