North Tyneside Council’s Cabinet is set to hear about two updated strategies as the authority looks at building a better North Tyneside.
Following consultation with residents, service users and stakeholders, the authority has refreshed both its Housing Strategy and its Homelessness Prevention and Rough Sleeping Strategy for 2023-2028.
The housing strategy sets out the range of activities the Council and its partners will undertake over the next five years to ensure residents enjoy access to good quality housing that meets their needs.
It is built around five key themes:
- Deliver affordable homes and support regeneration plans
- Prevent homelessness and improve our specialist housing offer
- Improve the private rented sector and tackle derelict properties
- Lead the Way – Greener Homes to Support work towards being carbon net-zero by 2030
- Support our tenants and residents and improve our communities.
The Homelessness Prevention and Rough Sleeping Strategy sets out how the authority, alongside its partners, will support rough sleepers and those people in North Tyneside at risk of homelessness; including further investment in services and provision to prevent homelessness.
And next week, on Monday 27 March, Cabinet will receive an update on both strategies.
Cllr John Harrison, cabinet member for Housing, said: “Ensuring our residents have secure, good-quality homes is one of our top priorities.
“We have made significant progress towards our target of 5,000 affordable homes, with over 2,100 delivered and we’ve seen a reduction in the number of empty properties by 39%.
“This strategy will ensure that we continue to provide homes that meet a range of health and age-related needs and reaffirm our commitment to supporting our most vulnerable residents access the right type of homes and support that they need.
“I am pleased to be able to present these new strategies and look forward to discussing them with Cabinet.”
We are already working to deliver these priorities including:
Delivering Affordable Homes and Support Regeneration Plans
Over £30m will be invested in new build Council housing over the next 10 years, in line with the Affordable Homes Programme, which aims to create 5,000 affordable homes in North Tyneside. To date, 2,100 homes have been built and further opportunities are being sought.
Support our Tenants and Residents and Improve our Communities
A new £3m fund to support tenants most in need over the next three years is to be set up, recognising the impact of the cost of living crisis, and the plan will create more apprenticeships within the authority’s Housing service, while continuing to support its award-winning Working Roots Programme.
Lead the Way – Greener Homes to Support Carbon Net-Zero by 2030
With a focus on the Council’s goal of working towards being carbon net-zero by 2030, the plan will continue to deliver Solar PV, Cavity Wall Insulation, External Insulation and cladding to non-traditional properties, plus installing double glazing and doors across all our homes.
