North Tyneside prepares to celebrate the Coronation of King Charles III

North Tyneside is preparing to celebrate the Coronation of King Charles III with street parties and special events in our libraries and parks.

The Coronation ceremony to mark His Majesty King Charles III’s ascension to the throne will take place at Westminster Abbey in London on Saturday May 6, 2023.

It will be conducted by the Archbishop of Canterbury and the King will be crowned alongside Camilla, the Queen Consort.

An extra bank holiday will take place on Monday May 8, 2023, two days after the ceremony, giving communities across the UK the chance to celebrate.

In North Tyneside, 76 street parties will take place across the borough. The council has supported residents to plan their parties in Benton, Cullercoats, Killingworth, Monkseaton, North Shields, Shiremoor, Tynemouth, Wallsend, and Whitley Bay.

North Tyneside libraries are hosting a range of family-friendly activities including arts and crafts, coffee mornings, and Coronation-themed story sessions.

Anyone in the mood for adventure is invited to take part in Royal Quest, a Coronation themed nature trail around Northumberland Park, from Friday 28 April to Thursday 11 May. Free trail maps are available at Northumberland Park Visitor Centre.

Coronation Picnic in the Park takes place at Wallsend Parks (Richardson Dees Park) on Saturday 6 May, from 10am – 3pm. It features live bandstand music, family entertainers and activities, and a picnic afternoon tea (available to purchase).

Young musicians from the council's Music Education Hub will provide the music, as part of The King's Coronation Bandstand project, funded by Arts Council England.
