Hypertension, more commonly known as high blood pressure, is one of the number one risk factors of cardiovascular disease. Cases are on the rise too, with more than 30 per cent of people living with high blood pressure being unaware they have the condition.
World Hypertension Day started in 2005 and takes place this year on Wednesday 17 May. It’s all about educating people and raising awareness of high blood pressure and the potential implications of the condition to help people take care of their heart and their health.
High blood pressure is manageable with medication and monitoring, but often has no symptoms, which is why so many people aren’t aware their heart health could be at risk and they need some support from their GP.
Some of the biggest barriers to having blood pressure reading includes needing to make an appointment and fear of the test being uncomfortable.
To combat these concerns, the Active North Tyneside team will be delivering a ‘How’s your heart?’ event offering free blood pressure tests on World Hypertension Day for residents of North Tyneside to know their numbers and get a better understanding of their health and wellbeing.
Checks will be available on Wednesday 17 May 2023 at:
- Wallsend Forum, 10.30am-1.30pm
- Howdon Community Hub, 3.30-6.30pm
The process is quick and painless and doesn’t require an appointment, you can drop into either venue any time the team are there for a free blood pressure check.
Please note, some pharmacies may be able to offer free blood pressure checks but eligibility criteria may apply. Some residents may also be eligible for a full NHS Health Check, which is a more detailed check to prepare for the future and take steps to improve your health.
