North Tyneside Council’s work towards a carbon net-zero borough by 2030 has been celebrated at the North East Energy Efficiency Awards.
Fighting off strong competition from other local authorities in the region, North Tyneside was awarded the Regional Council of the Year in the North East.
The award recognises the true commitment the Council has shown so far to promoting energy efficiency in the region. Winners of this award from 11 other regions across the country will compete for the title of Council of the Year at the national awards ceremony later this year.
Dame Norma Redfearn DBE, Elected Mayor of North Tyneside, said: “It’s fantastic to see the hard work of our colleagues and partners recognised with such a prestigious award.
“The climate emergency means we will continue to embed environmental sustainability throughout every area of council business. It is something we are very passionate about making a difference towards and we will continue to do all we can here in North Tyneside.
“Thank you to all of our colleagues who work hard to ensure our 2030 carbon net-zero ambitions are made a reality. I’ll have my fingers crossed for the national awards in September.”
In addition, the Council’s work on decarbonisation of homes in partnership with E.ON was highly commended in the Large Scale Project category. The scheme is aimed at tackling fuel poverty and cutting carbon emissions by offering residents with a low income the opportunity to upgrade their home’s energy efficiency measures through the free installation of external wall insulation, solar PV and air source heat pumps.
Cllr Sandra Graham, cabinet member for Environment, said: “We are delighted to have received high commendation for our work to alleviate fuel poverty in the borough. By working in partnership with E.ON, we have already helped make over 700 homes much more comfortable and affordable to run, while also making a huge contribution to our carbon reduction efforts.”
Anyone interested who thinks they may be eligible can check the criteria here, or by contacting the Green Homes Grant team at E.ON on 0333 202 4820. You do not need to be an E.ON customer to apply.
The National Energy Efficiency Awards ceremony will take place on 29 September.
