Motorists are advised that a temporary 50mph speed limit is being introduced on the 70mph section of the A1058 Coast Road.
The affected section is from the boundary with Newcastle (near the Wills Building) to just before the Silverlink junction (near B&Q).
The temporary speed limit will take effect from w/c 16 October 2023. It is being introduced as a safety precaution after a central reservation safety barrier on the A1058 Coast Road, showed evidence of corrosion. The barrier has been replaced but other sections may need repair work or replacement over the coming months.
Reducing the speed limit will be a precautionary measure to reduce the risk of a collision with a safety barrier and the severity of any impact while inspections and repairs of the barriers take place.
The safety barrier inspections are due to be done during the A1058 Coast Road’s routine maintenance works, which includes gully cleansing and litter picking, during 17-24 October 2023.
These works will be carried out in sections along the route via off-peak (9.30am to 3.30pm) lane closures and a 30mph speed limit.
At all other times, from w/c 16 October 2023, the 70mph section of the A1058 Coast Road will be temporarily kept at 50mph.
If the inspection identifies no safety barrier works, the temporary 50mph speed restriction will be lifted.
If works to the barriers are required, the temporary speed limit will remain in place until these are complete. In these circumstances, a further update will be provided.

- Tuesday 17 October –Wills Building to Tyne Met College eastbound. Slow lane closure and nearside lane closures on slip roads.
- Wednesday 18 October – Tyne Met College to Wills Building westbound. Slow lane closure and nearside lane closures on slip roads.
- Thursday 19 October – Wills Building to Tyne Met College eastbound & Tyne Met College to Wills Building westbound. Fast lane closures.
- Friday 20 October – Tyne Met College to Billy Mill junction eastbound. Slow lane closure and nearside lane closures on slip roads.
- Monday 23 October –Billy Mill junction to Tyne Met College westbound. Slow lane closure and nearside lane closures on slip roads.
- Tuesday 24 October – Tyne Met College to Billy Mill junction eastbound & Billy Mill junction to Tyne Met College westbound. Fast lane closures.
