A former addict who became an anti-drugs campaigner has given a series of talks to young people in North Tyneside.
Paul Hannaford is working with the council's Community Protection Team to deliver a series of hard-hitting workshops in local schools.
The former drug addict and gang member once served time in prison for drugs and firearms crimes, but he underwent a transformative journey that shifted the course of his life. Now he travels the country sharing his life story and warning youngsters about the dangers of drugs, knives, and gangs.
In 2022, North Tyneside’s Elected Mayor made tacking ASB a priority and established an ASB Taskforce to oversee the work, which includes prevention and education as well as enforcement.
Richard Mitchell, North Tyneside Council’s CPT manager, emphasised the power of education in the fight against serious violence. He said: “We are thrilled to have Paul Hannaford contribute to our efforts in North Tyneside. His lived experiences provide a unique perspective that resonates with the youth, making a lasting impact. The story of his life and struggles is powerful and we hope it will make young people think twice before ever being tempted by a lifestyle involving drugs and gangs.”
Paul’s visit to North Tyneside began with sessions at Silverdale School in Wallsend and Moorbridge Alternative Education Partnership School.
Moorbridge Alternative Education Leader, Dominique Elliott, has endorsed the initiative, recognising its potential to positively influence young people.
She said: “Paul's delivery offered students an insight into the real world of drugs, gangs and knife crime, a message that just can't be taught from a book. The workshop was hard-hitting, graphic, emotional and so much more.
“It provided students with the reality and consequences of drug abuse, and notably, helped break down the bravado we often receive through generic drug assemblies.
“The silence in the hall spoke volumes, you could hear a pin drop. It stemmed conversation and drew attention to the issues around serious violence, understanding the root causes and educating youths. A must have assembly!"
