Temporary speed limit on A1058 Coast Road update

Press release: An abstract view of the Council crest

The temporary 50mph speed limit on the 70mph section of the A1058 Coast Road will remain for the time being following the initial findings of safety barrier inspections.

It was introduced last month as a safety precaution after a central reservation safety barrier showed evidence of corrosion.

The temporary speed limit is from the boundary with Newcastle (near the Wills Building) to just before the Silverlink junction (near B&Q).

Specialist engineers have now completed inspections of the central reservation safety barriers, which total around 4km in length.

Although the survey report has not yet been finalised, the engineers have advised that there are barriers requiring replacement.

When the Authority receives the survey report, a works programme will be developed and implemented. Until then, the 50mph speed limit will temporarily remain in place to reduce the risk of a collision with a safety barrier and the severity of any impact.
