Users of the A1058 Coast Road in North Tyneside are advised of overnight lane restrictions.
The closures are to enable site investigations ahead of works to replace safety barriers along the route.
Since October 2023, a temporary 50mph speed limit has been in place on the 70mph section of the A1058 Coast Road from the boundary with Newcastle (near the Wills Building) to just before the Silverlink junction (near B&Q).
It was introduced as a precaution after a central reservation safety barrier showed evidence of corrosion.
Subsequent inspections of the central reservation safety barriers have shown that some barriers require replacement.
The site investigations, which will be between the Wills Building and the Silverlink junction, will assess ground conditions and the precise location of underground cables. They will require a lane closure in both directions and will take place overnight to minimise disruption to road users.
Subject to factors such as the weather, the works will begin on Wednesday, February 21 and last three nights. Between 8pm and 6am, a 1.5km section of the Coast Road’s outside lane will be closed in both directions.
When work is completed in one section, the team will move to the next section the following night. The works will progress in an easterly direction from the Wills Building towards Billy Mill junction.
There will be some unavoidable noise during the works as it will involve breaking out some sections of concrete.
North Tyneside Council would like to apologise in advance for any inconvenience caused by the works.
