The Village Hotel is the latest winner of North Tyneside Council’s Carbon Reduction Gold Award.
Launched in 2023, the awards recognise businesses who are committed to slashing carbon emissions, in line with the council’s aim to achieve carbon neutrality by 2030.
The hotel, in Cobalt Park, has shown real commitment to cutting carbon emissions and improving the sustainability of its business, even as occupancy levels continue to grow.
Councillor Sandra Graham, Cabinet Member for Climate Emergency, said: “We’re delighted that more businesses are taking steps to try and help us in our goal to be carbon net zero by 2030.
“The award is a great way for businesses to not only help the environment, but to also help themselves become more sustainable and profitable.
“I would strongly recommend other organisations to follow in the same steps as The Village and work to earn a Carbon Reduction Award, something which benefits not only the environment but also themselves.”
Having already won the Silver Green Tourist award, The Village has taken further steps to win the Gold Carbon Reduction Award, such as swapping all their lights for energy saving LED alternatives, as well as being powered entirely by renewable energy sources.
After conducting a full energy audit of the hotel, the Village team took action to review thermostat levels in rooms, reduce heating and air-conditioning consumption during quieter times, and address spots where heat was escaping.
Matt Horne, director of sales at The Village Hotel, said that “From the outside, we’re a hotel, a big energy consumer.
“It’s really nice to shout about what we are doing and to hopefully encourage others. All our hotels are now 100% renewable energy.
“We’re not just looking at the use of lights, we’re also looking at wastage and food waste, there’s such a bigger picture than just turning off the lights.
“We’re working closely with the Cobalt Business Park for other energy saving schemes”.
