The Borough of North Tyneside is paying tribute to former Councillor Muriel Green who passed away on Monday 8 April 2024.
Muriel dedicated more than 40 years to serving residents in North Tyneside and was one of the longest serving female Labour councillors in the North East.
She was first elected in 1982 in Weetslade ward, a position she remained in until 2023.
Muriel held the position of civic Deputy Mayor in 1991 and civic Mayor 1992 and last year she was given the title of Honorary Alderwoman.
Speaking after hearing the news the Elected Mayor of North Tyneside, Dame Norma Redfearn DBE, paid tribute to Muriel saying,
“Muriel was a friend, colleague and passionate councillor. Her dedication and service to the residents on North Tyneside was recognised in 2023 when she became an Honorary Alderwomen.
“She tirelessly served the people of Weetslade ward, as well as holding some of the highest civic positions our council has to offer, for over 40 years. She campaigned for her residents on a number of issues, especially around bus services and access for residents in the North West of the Borough.
“Muriel will be greatly missed across the political spectrum and from residents, businesses and communities in North Tyneside.”
