People across North Tyneside are set to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the D-Day landings, a pivotal moment in the liberation of Europe during the Second World War.
On 6 June 1944, Operations Neptune and Overlord began, representing a meticulously planned effort by the Allies to reclaim Western Europe from Nazi control.
This monumental campaign involved the coordinated movements of hundreds of thousands of personnel and millions of tonnes of equipment by sea and air, leading to a historic triumph.
2024 will see Veterans, the Armed Forces, and members of the public gather in North Tyneside to honour the 80th anniversary of D-Day, and the sacrifices made in liberating Europe.
Commemorative events include the raising of a special D-Day Flag of Peace at Quadrant on Thursday 6 June at 9am, while Amberley Primary school pupils have recorded a recital of Poem for Schools, D-Day Heroes, contributing to the remembrance.
On Sunday 9 June at 11am, a service will be held at Whitley Bay Cenotaph to mark the 80th anniversary of D-Day. Attendees will have the opportunity to lay wreaths or tributes in honour of those who served.
Members of the public are welcome to attend.
