Free family festival North Tyneside Together returns this summer with a day of entertainment celebrating the borough’s multicultural diversity.
The event is being held in Northumberland Square in North Shields town centre on Saturday 31 August, from 11am to 4pm.
It features live music, children’s rides, arts activities, food stalls, a diverse fashion display, a tombola and the first ever North Tyneside Together puppet mascot.
The mascot is a puffin, created by puppeteer and artist Saya Rose Naruse with help from the community. The puffin’s body is being designed and built by a steering group of volunteers at the Exchange 1856 in North Shields.
It will then be covered with feathers made by the community at a drop-in session at the Linskill Centre on Saturday 24 August from 11am to 4pm. All are welcome to come along and help.
North Tyneside Together is organised by North Tyneside Council’s Ethnic Diversity Community Task Force, whose members work to tackle racism and celebrate equality and diversity throughout North Tyneside.
Among the entertainment on offer will be North Tyneside Steel Band, singer Kanvee Adams, spoken word artist Rasheedat Isede, Voices of Virtue gospel choir, and local theatre and storytelling event Curious Caravan.
North Tyneside’s Elected Mayor, Dame Norma Redfearn DBE, said: “North Tyneside Together is a chance to celebrate the fantastic diversity of our borough.
“Organisations and groups from our local communities work together to put on an exciting programme of performances and activities for everyone to enjoy.
“This is a free family day out that gives people a chance to share cultures, music, food and art and it’s always a fantastic atmosphere. It’s become a special highlight of the North Tyneside events calendar.”
