North Tyneside Council is inviting residents to help shape how the Borough will look in the future.
Planning Officers are producing new planning guidance for good design that will ensure high and consistent design standards for new developments in North Tyneside.
The North Tyneside Design Code will set out design quality expectations for any new development, and will be used by Planning Officers when considering planning applications.
As a first step towards producing the Design Code, people are being asked what they think about design in the Borough and what areas and features, are particularly important to the local community. This will help shape the Draft Design Code, which will then be consulted on further before being finalised later in 2025.
North Tyneside Deputy Mayor Cllr Carl Johnson said: “We all know that North Tyneside is a fantastic place to live.
“As our Borough grows, it’s important that it does so in a way that reflects the very best of what it already offers.
“The Design Code will provide clear and specific standards that future developments will need to meet.
“I encourage our residents to get involved as we develop our code, after all they understand best what makes our Borough great and how it can be even better.”

In July 2021 the National Planning Policy Framework (NPPF) was amended to urge all councils to develop a local design code. Once adopted, the Design Code will replace North Tyneside Council’s Design Quality Supplementary Planning Document (SPD).
