North Tyneside Council will start consulting on its new Council Plan following approval from its Cabinet last night (Monday 23 June).
The Council plan will set out the initial policy priorities for the next four years and highlight the areas of focus for the recently elected Mayor Karen Clark, and her cabinet.
Five new priority policies will now form the basis of the Council Plan 2025-2029, which will be developed during consultation with residents, businesses, the voluntary and community sector, local councillors, strategic partners and stakeholders.
These new priorities follow the Mayoral Election on 1 May 2025, where Karen Clark was elected.
The Council Plan is the blueprint for what the Council will prioritise, the services it will deliver, how it will spend its budget and what it will do to address the needs of North Tyneside’s residents, businesses and communities.
The first stage of consultation for the Council Plan begins with the Big Community Conversation, where the Council will be asking people the simple questions ‘What do you like most about North Tyneside?’ and ‘What one thing would you suggest to improve North Tyneside?’.
The Elected Mayor’s initial priorities will help shape these conversations and the development of the plan. They are:
- Working with local people and organisations for a healthier, fairer and better quality of life.
- Giving our children and young people the best start in life.
- Building neighbourhoods and town centres that are clean, green and safe, and places to be proud of.
- Increasing jobs, skills and work experience opportunities.
- Delivering more affordable and social housing.
Elected Mayor Karen Clark said: “I’m delighted Cabinet has approved these priorities, and I’m looking forward to working with all our communities and partners in North Tyneside to shape a better future for the Borough.
"Tackling inequalities whilst making our Borough fairer, our neighbourhoods safer and cleaner and creating more opportunities are at the heart of what I want this Council to deliver. The views of our residents, businesses and partners will help us create a Council Plan that delivers for them, and makes a real, lasting and positive impact on their lives.
“We will listen to your views and make sure the next Council Plan is shaped by working together.”
This year The Big Community Conversation will be broadened out to include strategic partners from the North Tyneside Strategic Partnership who consist of Northumbria Police, North-East and Cumbria Integrated Care Board, Tyne & Wear Fire and Rescue Service, VODA, Education, Department for Works and Pensions and the North Tyneside Business Forum.
The consultation has now started and runs in various formats, helping to shape the Council Plan which will be brought to Cabinet and then Full Council in November.
You can find out more on how to get involved with the Big Community Conversation on the Council’s dedicated Engagement Hub. The Council’s Engagement Team will be out and about across the Borough in the coming weeks having conversations with residents and using their voices as part of the consultation process.
