Pedestrians are advised of the removal of a crossing point as part of the A1058 Coast Road Improvement Scheme.
From tomorrow (Thursday 25) the pedestrian crossing on Beach Road, nearest to Billy Mill Roundabout, will be removed to enable works to take place in and around the area where the crossing is.
The alternative recommended crossing for pedestrians seeking to travel between Lynn Road and Regent Terrace is the Coast Road underpass. The school crossing patrol officer, usually situated on Beach Road, will move to Regent Terrace to help pupils access the underpass.
The crossing will be closed until works are complete on Beach Road, which is expected in late May 2016.
Meanwhile, the temporary traffic signals that were at this crossing point near Billy Mill Roundabout will be moved to the temporary crossing point near Whitecliff Close. This is response to feedback from pedestrians who requested that it is made easier to cross Beach Road at this point. There is also an island crossing near Ludlow Avenue.
For safety reasons, pedestrians should not attempt to walk along the footpath on the northern side of Beach Road.
The Coast Road Improvement project is due for completion in 2017. It involves:
- at Billy Mill Roundabout junction: replacing the roundabout with a junction controlled by traffic signals; providing two lanes eastbound along Beach Road; and delivering improved facilities for pedestrians and cyclists.
- at Norham Road Bridge: widening the bridge to four lanes; adding traffic signals to the sliproad junctions; and providing improved facilities for pedestrians and cyclists.
The project is being managed for North Tyneside Council by its partner Capita. For any queries, please email roads@northtyneside.gov.uk or Tel: (0191) 643 6500. To subscribe to a regular e-bulletin about the Coast Road Improvement Scheme, email roads@northtyneside.gov.uk
