Advanced work is starting next week (w/c March 7) ahead of major improvements to a busy road in North Tyneside.

A £4.8million scheme to upgrade junctions along the A1056 at Sandy Lane is expected to begin within the next two months and will be completed by summer 2017.

From Monday, (March 7) work will begin at off-peak times to divert underground cables and utility services in the Sandy Lane area.

This will be carried out by the companies responsible for them between 9.30am and 3pm.  Motorists are advised that two-way temporary traffic lights will be required at times on Sandy Lane during these off-peak periods to enable the work to be carried out.

North Tyneside Council successfully applied to the North East Local Enterprise Partnership to fund the improvement project, which will be managed for the local authority by its partner Capita.

The main aims of the scheme are to: reduce congestion along the A1056 and improve journey times; enhance access to Sandy Lane Industrial Estate and support the growth of Indigo Business Park.

Cllr John Harrison, cabinet member for Housing and Transport, said: “North Tyneside’s highway network is benefiting from a multi-million pound investment.

“We have already begun to enhance the A1058 Coast Road and work will start soon to improve the busy Sandy Lane, which is another busy route.  We are taking away the roundabout which has been a source of contention for motorists and replacing it with a t-junction which should make the flow of traffic easier.

“This important scheme will reduce journey times for road users; benefit anyone going to businesses on Sandy Lane Industrial Estate and allow access to the new Indigo Business Park.”

The project includes:

  • Replacing the A1056 Sandy Lane/B1318 Roundabout with a signalised T-junction.
  • Providing two eastbound lanes from the A1056 Sandy Lane/B1318 junction to the Vehicle & Operator Services Agency (VOSA) Testing Station.
  • Installing traffic signals at the junction to Sandy Lane Industrial Estate and widening the A1056 Sandy Lane at this location to accommodate turning traffic.
  • Creating a new signalised junction for access to Indigo Park.
  • Installing a Pegasus crossing on Old Sandy Lane, next to Five Mile Park and providing improved facilities for cyclists.

A regular bulletin that will provide updates on progress will be issued during the project. To subscribe, email roads@northtyneside.gov.uk and put ‘A1056’ in the subject heading of the email.
