Safe Place scheme introduced in Wallsend

Elected Mayor Norma Redfearn with Keith Barnard, right, and Anthony Howe, Project Officer at North Tyneside Council

Godfrey Barnard Jewellers in the Forum Shopping Centre has become the first ‘SAFE Place’ in Wallsend.

SAFE Places are a network of buildings for anyone who feels vulnerable or need help whenever they are out and about.

The staff at SAFE Place venues have received additional training and will help any person registered with the scheme should they feel unsafe, afraid or disorientated in any way. They are easily identified as they all display a nationally recognised logo.

Elected Mayor of North Tyneside, Norma Redfearn, said: “The SAFE Place scheme is fantastic and provides a great helping hand to anyone who might need it.

“The safety and wellbeing of our residents is always our top priority and I’m delighted to see this programme growing in North Tyneside.”

Keith Barnard, owner of the jeweller, added: “My experiences as a police officer have made me aware of the importance of a safe place to those who are vulnerable, whatever the reason.”

The North Tyneside SAFE Place scheme is free and open to any adult or business in the borough.
