North Tyneside remembers The Holocaust

Children from 15 schools across North Tyneside will take part in a Holocaust Memorial Day service on Friday.

They will come together for readings and music recitals during a special service at the Quadrant East headquarters of North Tyneside Council.

Candles will be lit beside the Holocaust Memorial Plaque and there will be a keynote speech from Gay Keenaghan, the retired teacher from Wallsend, who escaped to North Tyneside from Vienna on the kindertransport in 1938. Other speakers will include Rabbi Aaron Lipsey, the Rev. Tony Curtis from St Mark's Church, Laura Pidcock from Show Racism the Red Card, and North Tyneside's Young Mayor, Kieran Archer.

Pupils from Monkhouse Primary School will perform a song they have co-written with singer-songwriter Phil Caffrey, inspired by this year's theme: 'How Can Life Go On?’

Guests will also have the opportunity to sign the HMD book and spend some quiet time in the Holocaust Memorial Garden.

The service is organised by the Holocaust Memorial Day Sub-Committee and follows an event on Monday, in which St Mary's lighthouse was illuminated in purple; the colour of the HMD Trust.

Elected Mayor, Norma Redfearn, said: "Our HMD commemorations give local people the opportunity to pause and reflect on a dark chapter in world history, and to think about the countless lives that were lost in the Holocaust and in other genocides around the world.

"The service brings together local people from all over our community, and more schools this year than ever before, to pay their respects and consider some difficult questions about consequence and responsibility arising from this year’s theme.

"We must never forget these terrible events or the lessons of the Holocaust. I’m proud that we are able to unite people each year to mark this very poignant date in history."

Holocaust Memorial Day marks the anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau, the infamous death camp where more than a million people perished.

The events in North Tyneside are among thousands taking place across the country. To find out more about the national programme of events, please visit the Holocaust Memorial Day Trust website at www.hmd.org.uk
