WORK has started on the construction of six new bungalows at Seaton Burn, in a further boost to North Tyneside Council’s affordable housing programme.
North Tyneside’s Elected Mayor, Norma Redfearn, met up with representatives of Kier North Tyneside to celebrate the start of work on Chapel Street, where six two-bedroom bungalows are now under construction.
The £800,000 scheme will offer homes for affordable rent and revitalise an empty plot of land once occupied by Chapelville Court sheltered accommodation.
Kier North Tyneside will then begin work on a further 20 affordable homes in June on the former Dudley & Weetslade Social Club site, in nearby Dudley, representing a £2.4m investment in the village.
The two developments, due for completion in the summer of 2017 and 2018 respectively, are being delivered as part of North Tyneside Council’s affordable homes programme, which will see 3,000 new homes built throughout the borough by 2022.
Elected Mayor, Norma Redfearn, said: “Providing good quality homes at a price that people can afford is a key priority for this council, as we strive to achieve our housing supply target of 3,000 new affordable homes over 10 years.
“It is vital to the identity of our communities that local people have the opportunity to continue living in the place they call home, and these fantastic new properties will enable them to do just that.
“I am delighted to see work starting at Seaton Burn and the progress being made by our partners Kier North Tyneside towards the start of the development at Dudley. These are high quality schemes which will bring much-needed homes to North Tyneside and make the best possible use of two disused sites.”
Kier regional director, Mike Furze, said: “We are proud to be delivering new homes at Seaton Burn and helping to provide the affordable housing the local community needs now and in the future.
“We’re looking forward to bringing an empty plot back to life, and continuing our work with North Tyneside Council to improve the quality of housing for residents across the borough.”
