Summer of fun in North Tyneside

A packed programme of events and activities across North Tyneside gets underway this month.

North Tyneside’s Summer Festival features dozens of popular events including performances from international street entertainers, park activities, a classic car show and much more.

An early highlight, Whitley Bay’s sandcastle competition, celebrates its 10th anniversary this weekend. Hundreds of people are expected to descend on the beach to create weird and wonderful castles and sculptures.

Elected Mayor of North Tyneside, Norma Redfearn, said: “The Summer Festival brings together a vast range of activities for our residents and visitors to enjoy right across the school holidays.

“With so many people holidaying at home or looking for things to do when they get back from their overseas break, we’ve got a great programme of events to get people out and about to enjoy our many attractions this summer.”

A six-week programme of free events will take place on weekdays at Tynemouth Station. There will be LEGO workshops, storytelling fun with some of the North East’s best storytellers, live jazz music and under fives sessions including messy play, dance and sports.

The Spanish City Plaza will host a summer of free circus shows with international street artists performing every weekend during the school holidays. Visitors can enjoy escapology, acrobatics, fire-eaters, comedy, juggling and can even get involved in some shows.

Attractions across North Tyneside including St Mary’s Lighthouse, Segedunum Roman Fort, Tynemouth Priory and Castle, Blue Reef Aquarium, Old Low Light and Stephenson Railway Museum will be home to an exciting and varied programme of activities.

North Tyneside Parks, including Rising Sun, Richardson Dees and Northumberland Park, will host teddy bears’ picnics, live music, den building, campfire cooking and guided walks. There are lots of fun events and shows taking place at Playhouse Whitley Bay, as well as at Customer First Centres.
