Some of North Tyneside’s most picturesque and historically fascinating sights will be open to the public as part of this year’s Heritage Open Days.

From September 7 until September 10, over 40 activities and events will take place in the borough.

As part of the annual event, there will be an array of exhibitions, shows and guided walks, and a number of venues will throw open their doors to the public, all free of charge.

And a number of these guided walks around the borough are now taking bookings, with highlights including: 

• Historic Tynemouth Local History Walk
Thursday 7th September 1-3pm
A unique look into the fascinating heritage of Tynemouth village.

• Historic Whitley Bay Local History Walk
Friday 8th September 1-3pm
An insight into the rich and diverse history of the historic seaside town.

• Northumbria World War I Commemoration Project Whitley Bay and Hartley South Cemetery Guided Walk
Sunday 10th September 11am-12.30pm
Tour of WWI graves and family memorials and the chance to learn about the fallen with stories about the men commemorated.

• Northumbria World War I Commemoration Project Wallsend (Church Bank) Cemetery Guided Walk
Sunday 10th September 2-3.30pm
A tour of WWI graves and memorials and the chance to learn about the loss to the community in Wallsend, Howdon and Willington Quay.

Cllr Eddie Darke, cabinet member for Leisure, Culture and Tourism, said: “Heritage Open Days are a fantastic opportunity for visitors to see some of the most famous sights in North Tyneside, for free.

“Our guided walks are absolutely fantastic and they give you a real insight into the fascinating history of our borough. I’d encourage everyone to have a look and see what’s on offer.”
